As a consequence, multigrade oils maintain their fluidity at lower temperatures while maintaining their consistency at higher temperatures (something monograde oils cannot achieve). This implies that even at the maximum working temperature, a multigrade's lubricating coating remains intact. SAE grade W denotes the winter term. The viscosity or oil flow at 0°F is indicated by the number placed before W. Your oil will function better in the cold the lower this value is. A specific viscosity grade at a higher temperature (212°F) is indicated by the digit after W. The engine oil will be more resistant to thinning at operating temperature with a higher number.
